Biography

"His is Bach-playing of the highest order – and a glorious conclusion to one of the finest Bach organ recordings in recent years". With this words the Gramophone describes the recent cd recording by Colin Walsh, the successful series featuring Bach played on English Cathedral. Colin Walsh has worked with Priory in an association for over 30 years and is considered one of the finest players in the world. His studies in Paris with the blind French organist and composer Jean Langlais inspired him to specialise in 19th and 20th century French organ music. In 1988 he played at The Royal College of Organist’s some music of Olivier Messiaen in front of the composer. Colin Walsh’s association with Cathedral music goes back over forty years. He has served, in various capacities, St George’s Chapel Windsor Castle, Christ Church Oxford (where he worked closely with Simon Preston and studied the organ with Nicholas Danby), Salisbury Cathedral and St Albans Cathedral. He went to Lincoln Cathedral in 1988 as Organist and Master of the Choristers, becoming Organist Laureate in 2003. His many recordings on the Priory label include two early recitals of modern French music from Salisbury, Vierne and Durué from St Albans and Vierne (second and third symphonies; twenty-four pièces en style libre) from Lincoln. The restoration of the Lincoln organ in 1998 was accompanied by a CD of more popular music on the Cantoris label and a recording of French music on the Guild label was released in 2005. On the same label, a recording of the fth and sixth symphonies of Widor was released in 2007, followed by a recording of organ music by Franck in 2008. In November 2009 a DVD, featuring Colin Walsh, Lincoln Cathedral and its organ, was released by Priory Records. He has recorded many times for the BBC. Since January 2003 he has been Organist Laureate of Lincoln Cathedral where he presides over the ne Father Willis organ and plays regularly for the Cathedral’s services. He describes the famous ‘Father’ Henry Willis Organ of Lincoln Cathedral as ‘one of the best’. He teaches in Cambridge and London and is an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Lincoln.
